What is NMI?
NMI stands for Nazarene Missions International
NMI Mission Statement:
To mobilize the church in mission through prayer, education, giving, and interactive experiences.
NMI Objectives:
- To encourage people to pray for all efforts of world evangelization
- To inform people of the world's needs and what the church is doing to meet those needs
- To challenge children and youth to learn about and participate in the mission of the church
- To raise funds for mission outreach
NMI RELATES...
...at the general level. The General Nazarene Missions International (NMI) is the organization
for mobilizing the local church in mission in the Church of the Nazarene. NMI is
the denomination’s representative for missions on the district and in the local church.
The General NMI Council represents the concerns of local churches, regions, and districts.
The general NMI president presides at General NMI Council meetings and at the
General NMI Convention. The general NMI director is the executive officer of the NMI organization and is responsible for the work of NMI throughout the districts around the world and the General NMI Office.
WHAT DOES NMI HAVE TO DO WITH MISSIONARIES?
1. NMI provides the support system for missionaries. For example: World Mission Department - www.nazarenemissions.org
- Screens applications and appoints candidates
- Assigns missionaries to the fields
- Sends salaries to missionaries
- Processes missionaries’ requests for medical assistance
- Receives prayer requests from the fields
- Responds to educational needs of missionaries’ children
- Trains missionaries for effectiveness in ministry
- Determines deputation for missionaries
- Arranges for missionaries on furlough and those
- Who are delegates to attend General NMI
- Convention
- Determines retirement of missionaries
Nazarene Missions International
- Provides missionaries with prayer support and personal items through LINKS
- Raises money for buildings through Alabaster; formulates Work & Witness teams on district/local levels; promotes offerings for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and World Mission Broadcast
- Helps raise the World Evangelism Fund. Through Missionary Christmas Fund, presents Nazarene missionaries with a monetary Christmas gift and sends Holiness Today, Mission Connection, and Come Ye Apart airmail, as well as Day-by-Day books
- Collects funds to help defray health care costs through Memorial Roll, Distinguished Service Awards, Gifts from the Heart, and Missionary Health Care offerings
- Alerts members of requests through Prayer Mobilization Line (816-444-PRAY, Email, and the NMI Web site), and Holiness Today
- Helps raise money to offset those educational needs through World Evangelism Fund
- Informs churches through NMI reading books, resource packets, Global Glimpses, Mission Connection, HeartLine, International Mission Education Journal, NMI page in Holiness Today and El Heraldo de Santidad, Grow, NMI Web site, and audiovisuals
- Welcomes missionaries home on furlough and invites them for deputation services in the local churches, helping equip them to return to the field.
- Responsible for and involves the missionaries in the General NMI Convention
- Helps provide assistance for retired missionaries through LINKS, Missionary Christmas Fund, Missionary Health Care (formerly Medical Plan) deputation funds, and World Evangelism Fund
2. NMI provides the delivery system for global awareness (formerly called mission education):
General Level
- Produces inspiring, informative books about missions
- Encourages the reading of these books
- Produces global awareness materials for all age levels
- Produces global awareness audiovisuals
- Informs through Global Glimpses, International Mission Education Journal, HeartLine, Holiness Today, Grow, El Heraldo de Santidad, and the NMI Web site
- Opens communication channels and prayer opportunities between missionaries and local churches
Local/District/Regional Levels
- Invites missionaries for deputation services in local churches
- Encourages and supports missionaries’ presence at district children and youth camps
- Prepares congregations for missionaries on deputation through prayer and publicity and encourages interaction and financial support
- Challenges young people to be involved in missions and to be open to a missionary calling
- Provides chain of communication to local/district/regional/general levels
- Puts global awareness into effect through global awareness resource materials, NMI reading books, Mission Connection, Holiness Today, International Mission Education Journal, Global Glimpses, El Heraldo de Santidad, audiovisuals, newsletters, and the NMI Web site
- Presents an informative and inspiring annual district convention and quadrennial regional conference.
NMI is involved cooperatively in the life cycle of a missionary (along with
the World Mission Department, the district, the region, and the local church).

- NMI educates individuals and congregations as to the missionaries’ work on the field.
